Essential Weekend Backpacking Gear Guide:
Your Ultimate Checklist
Are you ready to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and embark on a weekend backpacking adventure? Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a weekend warrior, having the right gear can make or break your outdoor experience. Here's a comprehensive list of essential gear to ensure a successful and enjoyable backpacking trip.
Check out all my Gear suggestions HERE!
1. Backpack:
- Choose a lightweight, durable backpack with enough capacity for your essentials. Don't forget the rain cover option ... to keep your gear dry during a sudden rain shower or from the morning dew.
2. Shelter:
- Look for adjustable straps and multiple compartments for efficient organization. I suggest if you have the time to go get fitted at one of your local outdoor stores. They will make sure the frame, straps, etc are specific to your body type.
- Compact tent or hammock for a comfortable night's sleep. Weight is important here if you a hiking-in to your backcountry spot... you might want to invest in a lightweight tent under 5 Lbs.
3. Footwear:
- Lightweight sleeping bag suitable for the season and climate.
- Sturdy hiking boots with good traction for varied terrain.
4. Clothing:
- Moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry -- I highly recommend some kind of wool or alpaca blend.
- Moisture-wicking base layers to regulate body temperature.
- Insulating layers for warmth in cooler weather. I almost always take long underwear with me. Being cold sucks!
- Lightweight, waterproof jacket for unexpected rain (even if the weather says no rain--take it!! You never know when the weather will quickly shift.
5. Navigation:
- Map and compass for traditional navigation.
6. Food and Water:
- GPS device or smartphone with offline maps for modern convenience. We love the All Trails App (paid version). Download the map before you head out on your trip. It won't do any good to have if you loose cell service.
- I use and suggest a hydration reservoir that can go into your pack. that way you easily stay hydrated on the trials. I also always bring some sort of Portable water filter system, life straw, or purification tablets.
- Lightweight cooking system, spork, cup, and nutrient-dense food.
- Bear Vault; A lot of national forests and parks require Bear vaults now. We love this one and the size is perfect for the weekend for 2 for food, toiletries, etc (anything that smells tasty).
7. Illumination:
8. First Aid Kit:
- Headlamp for hands-free visibility at night. i'm all about the rechargeable versions, but if you do not have one of these -- Don't forget you extra batteries.
9. Multi-Tool:
- Basic first aid supplies, including bandages, pain relievers, and blister treatment. I like to add a few extras to a basic kit- such as Mole-skin, a lighter, and a emergency space- blanket.
10. Fire Starter:
- Versatile tool for various tasks, such as cutting, opening bottles, and repairing gear.
11. Hygiene:
- Waterproof matches or a reliable lighter to ensure you can start a fire when if needed. Please check fire restrictions in the area before lighting a fire. Most places out west or above a certain elevation, do not allow fires.
- Biodegradable soap and a small towel for personal hygiene.
12. Extra Clothing:
- Pack a trowel for Leave No Trace bathroom practices. As a girl, I typically bring a ziplock bag to keep my tee-pee remnants in ( yes its gross to carry around but hey! I like to feel clean)
13. Personal Items:
- Pack an extra set of clothes in case of unexpected weather changes. So many hikers pack at the least weight they can and I get it... but if i can afford the extra weight you better believe I'm going to have warm dry clothes to change into!
- Identification & permits: Do you have Parking permits, park entry permits, Backcountry camping permits? Double check before you head to a camp spot that backcountry permits are/aren't required. Park systems will ask to see your permit... so make sure you have a printed copy or a screen shot.
Remember to tailor your gear to the specific demands of your trip, considering factors like weather, terrain, and personal preferences. A well-prepared backpack ensures you can focus on the beauty of nature and the joy of the journey.
